Why bother with a qualification? Without doubt, there are many, many skilled, experienced and talented technicians working in the field of Mobile Electronics. And traditionally, skills and experience are what is needed – standard of workmanship, reputation, and recommendation – to maintain the business and bring in new customers. There is nothing wrong with this view, for traditional, artisan, twentieth century type operations.

HOWEVER, times change, and they are changing in the motor industry right now! As a result of censure from the National Consumer Council last year, the motor industry is taking steps to address the large number of complaints motorists make about poor service at garage workshops. (Estimates suggest shoddy servicing and repairs could cost consumers as much as £4 billion per year.) The Retail Motor Strategy Group has agreed a code of practice designed to improve standards. The upshot of this is industry demand for qualified technicians will increase.

LAGOR TRAINING has been working with engineers and technicians for several years, enabling them to get the qualification related to the job they do. National Vocational Qualifications are exactly what the name says – Nationally recognised certification for a particular job. They are not a new idea, they’ve been around for many years and most readers will know someone who has achieved or is working towards the NVQ in their line of work. Unfortunately, few Mobile Electronics technicians know that there is a Mobile Electronics and Security NVQ available and not many have been brave enough to go for it!

The technicians that have achieved their NVQ did not find it as difficult as they feared. As with all NVQs, it is awarded when the candidate demonstrates competence to do a job to the required standard. It is a practically based qualification and the candidate has to provide evidence of both performance and knowledge. The candidate is observed and assessed at work, and a portfolio of evidence is put together. It does not necessarily involve lots of writing or schoolwork. Many technicians already have the knowledge, the experience, the skills required and are competent – they would simply be seeking certification and could achieve the NVQ without breaking stride.

So, why bother? Because... Qualification will soon be a requirement, not an option. Achieving a qualification now will give a competitive edge. And last but not least because you and your customers deserve it?
