The ultimate sound off event and highlight of the season, the EMMA European Carmedia Championships 2009, took place at the Ahoy Centre, Rotterdam in October. The competition was the star feature of the 100% Tuning Show, Holland’s biggest modified car show with more than 60,000 Visitors over the weekend. Six exhibition halls were filled with the hottest vehicles including 242 EMMA competitors from 25 Nations. EMMA Netherlands organised a spectacular show over two of the halls which comprised the “Audio Village”, where Dutch in car entertainment distributors and delaers displayed their skills and products relating to all areas of mobile entertainment. Judging teams were truly international also with judges nominated by 17 different nations working under the direction of head sound judges, Henrik Johannson from Sweden and Mika Taipalus from Finland. Four categories had more than 15 participants requiring a round of pre-judging to whittle the entry down to the six top competitors. The Advanced 5 Channel category was so close that pre judging threw up nine competitors who could not be separated.

They were all put through to the final round which was judged by a completely different team to the pre qualifiers. ESPL was judged and measured on the Saturday as a pre qualifier to Sunday’s grand finale. Always a crowd puller, ESPL final rounds happened in front of the Pioneer Show vehicle with other show sponsors; Clarion, Ground Zero, Hifonics, Rockford Fosgate, Bewith and DLS in close attendance. The UK was strongly represented with no less than 11 competitors in 9 classes and also supplied two judges in Carlo Corbin and Lee Frost. It is a fantastic feat just to get to the finals, European competition is fierce and the fact that the UK can compete in many categories after such a short time competing to EMMA rules deserves respect. To pick up silver ware is even better and the UK collected three trophies with Andrew Liddle collecting 1st place in Experienced 5 Channel in his first year of competition.

Arun Sharma collected 2nd place in Experienced Unlimited and Mark Turner came 3rd in Master 5 Channel. Three other competitors missed out on silverware by one place but, the UK definitely made an impact on the finals which augers well for next year. Drinking and dancing abounded and helped to break the ice before the serious side of the competition kicked off on Saturday morning. So, sound off competition is dead? Not one bit of it according to the success of this year’s season locally and the continued growth of the Euro Finals internationally. Next season’s UK competition kicks off next year at MEN’s  Auto Sound & Style show March 7th whilst the international season starts at a brand new show, Amicon, which will take place in Leipzig, Germany  April 10th to 14th.
