THE NEW BEATS

Connects2 have introduced some new BEAT head units just in time for Christmas with the launch this month of three thoroughly modern models - the BEAT195 mech-less receiver, 390 double-dinner and the 490 single DIN CD tuner. All have full iPod control and the 390 and 490 feature a digital radio tuner band.
The BEAT195 is the only new head unit of the three without a digital radio tuner stage but is consistent with a budget-level model. As mentioned, it’s a deck-less unit with a detachable front panel and 4x40W peak power. It has iPod full control plus USB and front panel AUX-In and also features an SD/MMC memory card slot. The FM tuner is RDS and it also has Bluetooth hands-free capability with phone number display, echo cancellation, background noise reduction and automatic pairing. The BEAT 390 is in the popular double DIN format with digital radio tuner which includes the more recent European DAB+ system. It has Apple device capability with full control of  iPod and iPhone. Other features include USB, AUX-In, SD/MMC memory card slot, CD deck with MP3 reading mode and FM RDS/AM tuner and has the same 40W amplifier section. The BEAT 490 is the answer to users requiring a CD deck and DAB/DAB+ tuner in a single DIN format with full iPod control and all the same features as the other two head units, including 40W per channel.

JVC Kenwood

JVC KENWOOD

The official Victor Company and Kenwood corporate knot was tied on October 1 in Japan but it’s business as usual in the UK. The association between the two companies on the car electronics side of the business is expected to have parallels with businesses such as the Volkswagen Audi Group where separate designers and production takes place but with the economy of scale being used to buy some components.
There is no hint yet of any merging of staff into the same building, occupying as they do, large premises in Neasden for JVC and Watford for Kenwood. This may eventually happen and there is some speculation that the companies could end up with the same CEO, but there is no hint of the merging of key staff associated with the two products.
Pundits have mentioned that there has been a reduction of staff at JVC’s Neasden building but this is thought to be mainly due to the removal of TV and departments which are now covered by European operations and despite rumours, is unlikely to be a precursor for movement of Kenwood staff from Dwight Road. Readers may recall that Kenwood at Watford also went through a similar slimming-down procedure a few year’s back. One of the few areas where the two organisations are in a single building is in Spain.
