M.E.N gets an insight into what some in the industry thought of the last year and what they believe the future holds.
It’s not a scientific piece of research, but with 2010 around the corner M.E.N decided it would speak to figures in the industry to find out what they made of 2009 and what they think 2010 will have in store. Despite such tough times over the last twelve to eighteen months hopefully there are some reasons for optimism in the coming year.

What the Industry Thinks
Utter Elation!
Adam Rayner reviews the Morel Elate Ltd Edition Three-way speaker system
Have you heard of the Red Sea Effect? It’s where the profit (as against the prophet) parts the waters. You get the Edge, the Juice, the Beat Audios and other entry level kit selling still and you get a bizarre smattering in sales at the rarefied top end. Mid-price products do not sell as well these days. The buyers are out there for the finest kit and these are the Bugatti Veyron of speakers. “Review”, are you kidding? They scored a terribly rare Talk Audio State Of The Art award when I gave them a 1,300 word pull through on the www.talkaudio.co.uk consumer magazine website…
Putting the Fun Back in
Using the ‘fun factor’ to sell audio equipment shouldn’t be a forgotten art. M.E.N investigates how you can inject that fun into your pitch.
As a dealer yourself you have probably witnessed at first hand how ‘fun’ can become a selling point. Take for example two separate visits from sales reps from two different manufacturers. Both of these reps want you to place big orders with them or take on a new product that they’re offering and they will do whatever they can to clinch your interest. Naturally, as a business, you will want to know all about the profit margins, delivery times, support offered by the manufacturer and more, as well as what the product actually does.
Interface Essential
Sailes Marketing unveil their latest CB-2 CAN Bus interface which now provides two outputs.
Sailes Marketing can rightly claim that their CB-1 CAN Bus interface has been a huge success. After 30-years in the business they know that research and hard work to create a fine working product is the key to success and with their CB-1 they have certainly found that. Not ones to rest on their laurels though, they are now offering dealers the CB-2 CAN Bus interface. This latest product can now provide two outputs, rather than the CB-1’s one output, adding an RPM signal to the speed pulse signal that both units offer. The new interface is the same size as their CB-1 item, which means because of its very small size and lightweight construction it’s just as simple to install.
Hard to BEAT
When it comes to function-packed head units at bargain prices the BEAT range certainly holds its own.
In a market that has increasingly been driven by price in recent times, having a product like the BEAT range of head units from Connects2 is essential for any dealer. These are the kinds of products that can not only attract new customers but also win them over to the possibilities of car audio in general, while at the same time giving dealers a decent profit margin. From the lowest specification to the highest, the four BEAT head units will cover virtually anything a customer will want, which in turn means a clear and simple solution for dealers too.
GPS Speed Camera Warning Units
Using co-ordinates to keep drivers safe and free from tickets
When it comes to speed cameras there are three main devices that can keep you away from points and costly fines; jammers, radar detectors and GPS speed camera warning units. Jammers essentially block laser signals from the likes of roadside speed check vans so can save any kind of prosecution. Although, on the flip side, while they are not illegal, using one to block a signal and avoid a fine could result in further prosecution. Radar detectors on the other hand alert drivers to any kind of radar signal meaning early warning for speed cameras.
Coming Together
In Phase Audio and Fast Car magazine prove that a joint
Fast Car magazine are calling this latest dark look ‘murdered out’, but for In Phase Audio it’s certainly not put the touch of death on their business…in fact, the opposite is likely to be true. The Nissan 350Z is a collaboration between the two companies, the log book having In Phase’s name on it, but the build-up of the car taking place in the pages of the magazine. However, it’s not quite as straight forward as a planned contra deal, in fact many of you may recall that In Phase previously had their own Nissan 350Z demo car. But with that car at the end of it’s tour of duty the plan had been to sell it and start anew until Fast Car turned up with another suggestion.
Five Minutes with Charlotte Body M.E.N’S Publisher
After years of trying we’ve finally persuaded M.E.N’s publisher, Charlotte Body, to put her thoughts down on these pages. With an exciting year planned for the magazine and the M.E.N Expo coupled with her years of experience in the industry she’s certainly in a good position to comment about the market as we head into 2010.
How did M.E.N come about?
I worked as a sales manger for In Car (Car Hi-Fi) in London. When the title closed I always thought it would have worked better as a trade magazine. I worked out of my dinning room for a year free lancing on various magazines, to fund my vision of Car Audio Retailer magazine which launched in July 2002, and the rest, as they say, is history!
